Milton, Ontario, Canada

The Milton District Hospital expansion was built to meet the increasing care needs of Canada’s fastest growing community and accommodate new technologies that are changing the way hospital care is delivered. The expansion added a total 330,000 ft² of new patient-centered space, more than tripling the size of the hospital and doubling its inpatient beds from 63 to 129 beds.

HCR was contracted to provide Transition Advisory and Physical Relocation services by Plenary Health, the “Project Co” for this design-build-finance-maintain P3 project. HCR was retained by Halton Healthcare to provide Patient Relocation services during the transition into the newly constructed expansion.

After months of detailed planning, the physical relocation was completed over one week in October 2017 and concluded with the patient transfer, which saw a total of 43 in-patients from the obstetrics, medical surgical, intensive care and emergency departments safely transferred to the newly expanded facility in under three hours. The thorough and detailed planning provided by HCR resulted in a seamless transition that allowed the new expansion to become operational immediately after opening. The hospital took the first patient into the new ER within an hour of opening and accepted visitors by 2pm. The first surgery was performed in one of the new operating rooms later that same day.
