West Park Healthcare Centre is the regional adult rehabilitation center for the Western Greater Toronto Area, providing a wide variety of complex continuing care and long-term care services for those who have suffered after a life‐altering illness or injury such as lung disease, amputation, stroke or traumatic musculoskeletal injury.The $1.2 billion West Park Healthcare Center P3 Redevelopment Project saw a new six-story, 730,000 ft², 314-bed, detached hospital constructed on West Park’s existing 27-acre campus in the York district of the busy GTA. This new facility allowed for the expansion and consolidation of inpatient, outpatient and outreach services that were previously housed in three separate buildings – the Main Building, the Ruddy Building, and the Gage Building. It also provided the additional space needed to add two new services to West Park’s service offerings – a new Satellite Hemodialysis service, operated in collaboration with Humber River Hospital, and a new Geriatric Day Hospital.
HCR was retained under two separate contracts with both the hospital and EllisDon (Project Co.) to provide a variety of transition related services for the project. Transition Advisory, Asset Move Planning and Physical Relocation services were provided to EllisDon, and Patient Move Planning, Move Coordination and Patient Portering services were provided to West Park.
This work began in late 2017, and HCR remained in a continuous role of support throughout the project, working closely alongside both EllisDon and West Park for over half a decade, to prepare for this massive transition. Customized move plans and schedules were developed that coordinated the delicate transfer of both assets and patients that would be moving while taking into account the intricacies and risks of transferring active healthcare services from three separate locations.
These plans were carefully executed over two weeks in early April 2024, when HCR staff performed the physical relocation of all assets moving from various departments within the existing hospital, and the nearby Gage and Ruddy buildings. This culminated in the patient move on the final day, that saw HCR staff assist the West Park staff in efficiently portering a total of 235 patients safely into the new state-of-the-art facility.
