VHC Health (previously known as Arlington Hospital and then Virginia Hospital Center) is an independent, not-for-profit, teaching hospital that provides medical care to those from throughout Northern Virginia and the Washington, DC area.
The existing 9-story, 530,000 ft², 453-bed facility’s last major renovation/expansion was completed nearly twenty years ago, in November 2004. In August 2019, VHC Health began construction on a new 250,000 ft² Outpatient Pavilion located on a 5.5-acre parcel of land next to VHC’s main campus. This new facility expanded the availability of much needed outpatient services in the region by providing new physical and aquatic therapy rooms, outpatient lab and pharmacy, surgery and endoscopy treatment rooms, and women’s imaging suites.
HCR provided Move Planning Support, Physical Relocation of Assets and Asset Consolidation services for the project, working closely with VHC and its transition planner, Hammes Healthcare. HCR attended numerous Move Committee meetings and worked closely with VHC Health and their project teams in the months leading up to the move to support and guide the development of detailed move plans. Initially anticipated to be a two-phase move, this was changed to a single-phase under HCR’s guidance, which greatly minimized the disruption of the transition for both patients and crucial outpatient healthcare services.
Once the move strategy was finalized, HCR created a detailed move calendar, developed department-specific move plans for each department relocating and coordinated all required activities and services with VHC’s equipment planner in preparation for the move. HCR then performed the physical relocation of all equipment, furniture and other items from the existing hospital into the new outpatient pavilion. Immediately following the move, HCR consolidated all remaining items that were not moved into specified locations on the ground floor at the existing facility. This work was completed over five consecutive days in mid-July 2023.
