HCA Healthcare was one of the first health systems in the country when it was established in 1968 and today is the largest health system in the USA, operating 182 hospitals and over 2,300 sites of care across twenty US States and the United Kingdom, including surgery centers, freestanding ERs, urgent care centers, diagnostic and imaging centers, walk-in clinics and physician clinics.
HCA’s Sweeten Creek Mental Health & Wellness Center Project saw the construction of a new $62 million, 84,000 ft², 120-bed facility to replace the aging 82-bed Mission Hospital St. Joseph campus, which was constructed in 1974. The overall number of beds grew by 38, allowing HCA Healthcare to increase its overall patient care capacity while providing advanced therapies, technologies, and evidence-based best practices to improve the health and well-being of the community. The new center is one of the only in-patient psychiatric care facilities in the Asheville area, providing treatment to all age groups, beginning at 4 years old and extending through the geriatric years and includes an in-house pharmacy, an electroconvulsive therapy wing and a wing for intensive outpatient treatment for adults.
Construction began in November 2021 and was originally slated for completion in January 2023, but was pushed back due to supply chain delays. HCR worked closely with the facility throughout the project to accommodate for these changes to ensure a successful opening.
Once the building was ready for occupancy in early November 2023, HCR staff carefully relocated all specified assets, office contents, inpatient unit contents, exam room contents, and group therapy room contents from their existing locations at the St. Joseph Campus to the new facility, as well as several outpatient specialists that work in collaboration with the inpatient programs, who were located in a separate building on the St. Joseph campus. The patient transfer took place on the final day of the move with 71 child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients safely transferred into the new facility over 5 hours.
