To address the ever-increasing need for long-term care services in the province of British Columbia, two provincial health authorities, Fraser Health and Providence Health Care, came together and collaborated to lease, renovate, and operate a new long-term care home in Burnaby, British Columbia.
The new facility, called Chénchenstway Care Home, which is a Squamish word meaning “to lift each other up”, is located in the same building as the former The New Vista Society Care Home, which had been vacant since New Vista relocated to a new replacement facility in July 2020. Extensive renovations to all areas of the existing 1975 building were made to bring it up to modern standards, with 216 single-occupancy rooms, each with a private washroom, enlarged dining area and showering facilities, and improved overall building function. This new space allowed Providence Health Care and Fraser Health to offer an enhanced living environment to seniors who were previously living in five of their other nearby facilities that were less ideal.
HCR was selected to provide staff and asset transfer planning, physical relocation of assets, resident transfer planning, and resident transfer coordination services for the Chénchenstway Care Home project. HCR worked closely with both health authorities and all other project teams over six months to develop detailed relocation plans for all staff, assets, and residents that were moved from five other nearby facilities into the new Chénchenstway Care Home.
These plans were executed over four days in October 2023, with the relocation of all staff, office space contents, and other assets taking place on the first day, followed by a three-day resident transfer. A total of 140 residents were safely moved into their newly renovated home, with 23 residents from Brock Fahrni and 11 residents from Mount St. Joseph safely transferred on the first day, followed by 72 residents from Queens Park Care Centre on the second day, and 19 residents from Felburn Care Centre and 15 residents from Holy Family Hospital on the third and final day. Immediately following the move, HCR performed a Post Relocation Assessment, which identified and highlighted lessons learned throughout the move to assist the health systems with future transitions.
